OFW as Philippine Exports: Its Contribution to our Economy

February 1st, 2010 by TrabahoASenso.com

Working away from this country has always been dreamt of by most Filipinos. They find “luck” outside this country, sacrificing the very Filipino trait that is “attached” with their beloved families. But that’s how it is, they work abroad to be able to give their families the best they could.
Countless Filipinos travel abroad and look for jobs. Indeed, the OFW and emigration strategy is working to help people live better lives. However, while the strategy benefits individuals and the Philippine economy to an extent, the option of being an OFW or emigrant has its negative consequences. The said consequences are ignored in an effort to help our third world nation.
Somehow, exporting labor power is rewarding not just financially but also prestige wise. The qualities of Filipinos as exemplary workers are being exposed around the globe. Well this good thing could just only mean more profit favorable to us and our economy. The demand for our workforce is elevating and that is a good sign.
The overseas workers are referred to as the country’s biggest comparative advantage in our increasingly borderless world. The Philippines has moved ahead of other countries in training our workers for taking on overseas jobs, and we are now reaping the benefits.
The country’s excellence in overseas migration is our version of globalization. Though we cannot run multinational firms, what we deploy is human capital. Countries prefer our overseas Filipino workers over other nationalities. We as workers are clean, good and productive.
A Filipino family member abroad can possibly feed or finance the living expenses of his whole family and even his extended families. This is very true in most OFW families, the truth lies that our cost of living is far cheaper than other OFW destinations. The earnings remitted in our country contribute a lot in our national pot. The idea that this OFW’s family is excluded to the count of hungry constituents is a plus.
The remittance data showed that in the past five years, it doubles up. That helped us cope with the global crisis wreck. Hopefully, our nation’s labor exports would continue to prosper and earn more for a better economy.
